Apply For A Grant

The Trust’s purposes are widely drawn but its focus is the support of older people and their carers; charities and charitable partnerships that are able to highlight identified or assessed needs in older people and their carers in and across different community settings, particularly in Edinburgh and the Lothians, and that seek to work together for the good of these vulnerable groups.

Organisations and activities supported since the Trust was set up in 1996 include:

Health charities / day centres / arts projects helping to tackle loneliness / organisations offering rehabilitation or respite / transport for the elderly & infirm / pet fostering.

During the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020-21, the Trustees made substantial grants to support charity food banks in Edinburgh.

Proposals Must:

  • Be submitted by email to the Secretary using the Trust’s standard application form.

  • Be targeted at activity benefiting older people particularly in the Old Town, Edinburgh and Lothians area.

  • Be able to demonstrate positive impacts and outcomes for the lives of disadvantaged, disabled and vulnerable older people and/or

  • Be designed to provide a general benefit for a defined community or group of older people in the population (projects that are intergenerational will also be considered provided they can demonstrate clear benefits to the elderly and align with our other purposes).

The Trust will prioritise applications from:

  • Newly established groups seeking to tackle the needs of older people where existing resources are scarce or not available.

  • Organisations making new or innovative attempts to support older people with fresh approaches to service provision and contributing to wider social inclusion of vulnerable or excluded groups.

  • Smaller local charities (but will consider larger charities that meet its other criteria).

The Trust expects applicant organisations to provide:

  • Clear explanations of their proposals and the intended outcomes obtained from grant aid.

  • A copy of their latest annual accounts (or equivalent for smaller charities) and a project budget.

  • OSCR registration details.

Who can apply?

Registered Charities and organisations such as social enterprises, provided they deliver activities or outcomes that further the Trust’s own purposes, and for no other purpose.

How often can you apply?

  • Twice within a 5-year period from the date of the first award.

  • Trustees meet twice a year in spring and autumn to consider applications. The annual deadlines for submission of applications will be 15th March and 15th September respectively.

NB. Queensberry House Trust is relatively small and is unable to provide long-term ongoing support. It mainly seeks to support smaller organisations with limited resources and assets. Typically, the grants awarded tend to be in the region of £5000 to £15,000

What can you expect from the Trust?

You will receive either:

  • A letter of Award and a cheque or

  • A request for a visit or further information or

  • A letter of rejection, giving the reason and an indication as to whether or not another application may be made at a later date.

What does the Trust expect from you?

  • Organisations benefiting from the Trust’s support are expected to acknowledge the financial support received in their Annual Reports and in any literature, publicity or site notices relating to projects and activities funded by the Trust.

  • A report of the outcomes of the grant aid supplied within 12 months of the date of the award or on completion of the project, whichever is sooner. In the event that the money has not been spent or the outcomes have not been achieved, a letter of explanation is required, and the Trustees reserve the right to recoup the money if the circumstances warrant it.
